      The Blues Show

The Blues Show with Jonny Meister airs Saturday nights

from 7PM to Midnight on WXPN.

Coming Up On  The Blues Show  September 5, 2015:

          •

In the midnight hour on Blue Dimensions, a new album from Larry Coryell. Coryell's album Heavy Feel mixes desert melodies and blues in a way that is uniquely Larry Coryell. We'll hear several tracks, and some earlier Larry Coryell, including his first recordings as a featured artist with Chico Hamilton in 1966 on Hamilton's album The Dealer. Also a debut album from blues singer Sherwood Fleming a little ahead of his 80th birthday - - much better late than never - - and Ernestine Anderson, newly available performance recordings from 1962, also much better late than never! Also: some blues about the music business from The Cash Box Kings, from their new album Holding Court and the latest from pianist Harold Mabern, plus a new album, Wildflower, from expressive singer Joanna Pascale.

About The Blues Show and Jonny Meister

The Blues Show airs every Saturday night from 7:00 to Midnight on XPN. Host Jonny Meister explores this music and its history not only because it is the key ingredient in later rock and pop music, but also because of its own special allure and unique power as a style of music and expression of the human soul.

Catherine Russell and Jonny
Jonny Meister with Catherine Russell

The Blues Show covers the entire history of the blues from 1920 to the present, from the best-known to the most obscure blues, with focus on the present-day blues, but with an eye on the rich history of this music and its large body of timeless recordings.

Host Jonny Meister has been playing the blues on WXPN since March 1977. Meister grew up with old blues records in the house. His father played boogie woogie on the piano, which Jonny learned at about the age of 12. Later he played in rock bands and did a few solo gigs as a singer-songwriter. As his interest in blues grew, he became especially interested in the history of the music, a history not always revealed by the rock musicians and their promoters who drew heavily on the blues.

Jonny spent a week with the family of the late, great blues musician J. B. Lenoir in 1979, and he was one of the consultants for the Wim Wenders film The Soul Of A Man which featured Lenoir, in the PBS film series The Blues. He won the "Keeping The Blues Alive" award for work in Public Radio for The Blues Show in 2000 and a "Best of Philly" award from Philadelphia Magazine in 1996 for "Best Local Radio Show".

Mississippi bluesman Robert Belfour, a hill country blues artist who took part in our Mississippi Blues Project concert series in 2013 has died at age 74. Robert Belfour was born in 1940 on a farm near Holly Springs, MS. He had early memories of his father playing guitar, but when his father died when Robert was just 13, he became the primary wage-earner for the family; music was something he did when there was time outside of work, which was not often enough. Belfour did construction work in Memphis for many years, though for a long time, he had to commute every day to Memphis from rural Mississippi, which took a lot of time. Finally, he relocated to Memphis. Belfour sometimes performed in a park there, and later got club gigs. He was in his fifties when he was first recorded in 1994 for a blues anthology, and later went on to record two albums for the Fat Possum label. His blues career blossomed after retirement from construction work, with the opportunity to travel and play his music full-time. We were very fortunate to have him at our Mississippi Blues Project in the winter of 2013, A little more than a year after that, his health deteriorated to a point where he stopped performing. Roger Stolle who is active in the Delta blues scene with a blues-related store in Clarksdale MS did an interview with Belfour available from Blues Music Magazine, with a performance video as well.

The Memphis Blues Society is organizing a benefit to help Robert Belfour's family with the expenses of his funeral and burial.
