Land of the Lost

Rediscover the 1980's pop & underground landscape with a great mix of cult classics and new wave anthems, woven together by DJ Robert Drake the final Friday of every month from 7-11pm on WXPN.

Drake began spinning the new wave sounds when they were NEW wave sounds, working in various underground clubs in Philadelphia during the gritty era of 1980-1986. From off-radar spots like The Love Club to commanding nights at Philly’s premier alternative hotspots The Kennel Club, Omni’s and a few special nights at Danceteria in NYC, the Rock of the 80s became his passion.

And now he shares his passion with you - every final Friday on WXPN.

TOM TOM CLUB - May 2013

Join me the final Friday of May - May 31 - as we enter the Land Of The Lost and celebrate the Rock of the 80s!

Besides our normal celebration of the Rock of the 80s, I'll be chatting with Chris Frantz & Tina Weymouth of Tom Tom Club in the 8pm hour! Also, I'll be spotlighting just some of the answers I've received this month - when I asked listeners to share a New Wave song that really changed or shaped your life when you first heard it years ago!

The LOTL chat room will be up and running - to enter, just click HERE. See you on the radio from 7-11pm EDT or live worldwide - just click the Listen Live dropdown at the top of the screen.

SPRING FLING - April 2013

Join me this Friday, April 26, for our next trip into the LAND OF THE LOST, the monthly 4-hour block of the Rock of the 80s! Besides our usual mix of fun flashbacks, I will turn the spotlight on several LOTL artists who will be in town over the next few months including; Johnny Marr, Peter Murphy (performing Bauhaus), Bush Tetras, The Psychedelic FursOMD, Wire, New Order and more!

The LOTL chat room will be up and running - to enter, just click HERE. See you on the radio from 7-11pm EDT or live worldwide - just click the Listen Live dropdown at the top of the screen.

A SHORT MONTH, A SHORT SHOW - February 2013

It’s time for our monthly trip inside the Land Of The Lost – however, thanks to Penn Basketball we’ll have a shorter than usual 4-hour block of the Rock of the 80s this time ‘round.

Join me right after Penn Basketball (approx 9pm ET) as I celebrate some of MY favorite Rock of the 80s tracks … no chat room this month, just wall-to-wall New Wave goodness … from a-ha to XTC and back!

And if you’re on Facebook – be sure to join our Land Of The Lost group

See ya on the radio!

LADIES OF THE 80s - January 2013

Siouxsie Every month in the Land Of The Lost (LOTL) I celebrate the genre that will never be forgotten; New Wave. There are so many talented artists that deserve their place in the history of the Rock of the 80s but quite often the men of New Wave over shadow the women.

Not this month!

Join me on the final Friday of January – January 25 – from 7-11pm ET as I turn my LOTL Spotlight to the LADIES OF THE 80s! From those household names like Blondie, Siouxsie & The Banshees and The B-52's to those that might just be forgotten if it wasn't for shows like LOTL (The Slits, Bush Tetras and Lizzy Mercier Descloux are just a few that come to mind!) Siouxsie You can This email address is being protected from spambots. Also – be sure to join the LOTL chat room during the show and reminisce with us as we celebrate the Ladies Of The 80s on the next Land Of The Lost! Happy New Wave! - Robert Drake

Howard Jones Interview

Howard JonesIt was in 1983 that Howard Jones released his first single "New Song" in the UK. The expectation was that it might sell a few thousand copies and introduce his fresh new music to an unsuspecting world. The reality was quite different. The single steadily climbed the UK chart to peak at No. 3. Then came the second single "What Is Love?" which reached No. 2 in the UK and the third single, the enigmatic "Hide and Seek", which showed the spiritual side of Howard Jones' writing. This was followed by the first album Human's Lib which came straight in at No. 1 in the UK in April 1984, eventually going platinum and which took the synthesizer and Howard to a new plateau.
